Democrat Andrea Stewart-Cousins officially took over the 35th Senate seat Wednesday and vowed to work with Governor Eliot Spitzer (D-NY) on making positive changes.
It's the first time in nearly three decades that Republican Nick Spano will not be the face of the 35th Senate District. Stewart-Cousins beat out the 20-year incumbent by about 2,000 votes. The win for Stewart-Cousins came after she lost to Spano two years ago following a three-month recount.
Stewart-Cousins was the only Democrat to pick up a seat in the Republican controlled Senate. So far, Stewart-Cousins is shrugging off any doubts and stands confident in the new Democratic governor.
