Celebrating the Knights: State champs get royal treatment at victory parade
The Mount Vernon varsity basketball team are state champs, and that title was on full display Friday.
Fans from all over Mount Vernon cheered the team on along the parade route. The motorcade kicked off at Mount Vernon High School, and News 12 was there to capture all of the excitement. The celebration ended at City Hall with a final ceremony.
The celebration comes after the Knights beat Green Tech 55-45 last month to claim the Class AA state championship.
"They worked so hard, they got along so well, and they just brightened up Mount Vernon," says coach Bob Cimmino. "The schools and the whole city."
Residents like Troy Coleman lined the parade route—he gifted the team some gummy bears, a snack he's given the players every game and practice this season.
"It's just a great group of young men both on and off the court," says Coleman.
This is Mount Vernon High School's 12th state championship and fourth by an undefeated team.
"These are all Mount Vernon residents who have gone through our public school system to create this type of legacy that we have in Mount Vernon and have a legendary season," says Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard.
Players also received a plaque to mark the huge accomplishment.
