A large number of people are expected to hit the water this Memorial Day Weekend, and Carmel police have a new tool at their disposal to keep people safe.
They officially christened the department's new patrol boat Thursday.
The 21-foot Life Proof boat is replacing the department's old vessel that is pushing 20 years.
It will patrol at Lake Mahopac throughout the summer..
The craft has some major upgrades, including side/down scanning sonar, a thermal camera and the ability to tow large vessels.
Chief Anthony Hoffmann says Marine One will hit the waters Friday.
"We are looking for speeding boaters, unsafe boating, reckless boating, boating while intoxicated, anything that would impact safety of everyone on the lake," says Hoffman.
The price tag on the new vessel was $140,000, but officials say it was purchased at a reduced cost of $70,000 thanks to state grants..
