Cardinal Edward Egan gave an exclusive interview to News 12 Westchester to discuss the labor dispute between the New York Archdiocese and the Catholic teachers union.
In the interview, Egan praised the teachers and expressed a desire to avoid a strike. The cardinal says he wants to give the teachers as much money as is possible.
"They're wonderful teachers," says Egan. "We have to do the best we can to give them every help we can."
The two sides are still at odds, however. Teachers at three Westchester elementary schools held sickouts on Friday and more could follow.
The teachers have been working without a contract since the beginning of the school year. They are seeking higher salaries and better health coverage in the new contract.
Egan told News 12 Westchester a fair offer has been made to the teachers.
"I think we have a wonderful offer on the table, and I'm hopeful they will accept it."
