An illegal U-turn by a milk tanker truck almost turned deadly Wednesday morning on the New York State Thruway in Yonkers, police say.
The accident occurred at around 5 a.m. in the middle of the toll plaza near Stew Leonard's Drive.
As the truck tried to get over to the northbound side of the tolls, a car traveling southbound slammed into it and got wedged underneath the vehicle. Lanes on both sides of the Thruway were shut down, causing backups during the morning commute. Dozens of emergency crews responded to the scene to pull the crumpled car from under the truck.
Since it was still dark, state police say the driver of the car couldn't see the actual tanker part of the rig because there are no lights on it.
The driver of the car was taken to the hospital and treated for a broken leg and some lacerations. The truck driver was issued several tickets.
