New York City Comptroller William Thompson Jr. defeated Councilman Tony Avella Tuesday for the Democratic nomination for mayor.
Primary elections were also held for the city's public advocate and comptroller, as well as for several City Council seats in the Bronx.
In City Council District 11, incumbent Oliver Coppell is looking to hold off a challenge from Anthony Perez Cassino in one the borough's most heated races.
A hot topic of debate in District 11 has been the Croton Water Filtration Plant, which both candidates have said was over budget and may negatively affect Bronx residents who pay for water.
Polls will be open across New York City until 9 p.m.
