The owners of two popular Mount Vernon businesses say they are trying be optimistic after a fast-moving fire destroyed a strip mall in the city.
Sal's Deli and Sal's Laundromat were destroyed Monday by the flames.
The three-alarm fire started at around 1 a.m. at 226 Gramatan Ave. in Mount Vernon.
About a dozen residents living above the businesses were able to get out before their apartment building collapsed.
There were no injuries, but residents lost their belongings. Nearby Nelson Mandela High School had to be closed down for the day due to smoke from the fire.
Electrical engineers and Mount Vernon fire investigators are still looking into the exact cause of the blaze.
