Business owners along Huguenot Street in New Rochelle say they are seeing a rise in homelessness.

The news follows the slaying of a transient woman last week.

The business owners say it’s an unusual crime for their normally quiet neighborhood.

“It's scary. This is a great neighborhood, it's something to be alarmed about,” says business owner Peter Cucullo.

News 12 has been told that homeless people can be seen wandering around a park across the street from the old Armory building. That's where police investigated the homicide of the transient woman whose body was found Friday.

New Rochelle police say the man charged with murdering the woman is also homeless.

News 12 went to two homeless shelters, Oasis and Providence House, but they declined to go on camera.  Some say they have seen the suspect at Oasis.

New Rochelle provides resources for people without a permanent home through Hope Community Services. According to a "Hope" spokesperson, 71 people in New Rochelle are homeless.  A total of 62 of those people are in shelters, which officials say is similar to last year.
