Some parents are being extra cautious and purchasing bulletproof backpacks for their kids.

TuffyPacks feature ballistic inserts placed in a child's backpack. The company says it provides the same level of protection that police officers wear on a daily basis.

Online retailers, including Walmart, KMart and Bed, Bath and Beyond, are also selling bullet-resistant backpacks from anywhere between $100 to $500.

Keith Guinyard, is the director of SNUG, or guns spelled backward. The group aims to move New Yorkers away from a culture of violence.

Guinyard says although shootings are a reality, a bulletproof accessory isn't the solution.

“That's just letting the community know it's not safe at all and we have no control whatsoever,” he says.

Guinyard suggests communicating with students at a young age instead.

Parents News 12 spoke to about the bags had mixed reactions. Some say they don't prevent crimes from happening while others say it's better to be safe than sorry.

According to several manufacturers, sales of the bulletproof products have increased between 200% and 300% following the recent mass shootings in El Paso, Dayton and Gilroy.
