Police say a boulder caught in an apparent mudslide collided with a Yonkers business overnight, causing it to collapse and shut down a portion of Saw Mill River Road.
Fire and police were called to the scene at Peterson Tool Rental building at 1256 Saw Mill River Road around 7 a.m. after workers arrived to find the massive amount of damage. No one was injured.
The family-owned business was established in 1953. Its owners told News12 that “it's a blessing that no one was hurt."
The busy Saw Mill River Road was packed with emergency vehicles Monday morning and had to be shut down in both directions between Tompkins and Rider avenues.
The part of the building that collapsed stores small construction vehicles, such as front loaders, black top pavers and lawn mowers. It also had a 500 gallon heating oil tank. Some of the fuel spilled into the street so firefighters had to place absorbent booms, and spread sand to soak it up.
Yonkers Deputy Fire Chief Chris Canfield told News 12, it looks as though a mudslide brought on by the rain is the cause.
"There's some rock walls and I guess with all the rain, it had a little bit of a mudslide on the lower portion of the wall,” he said. “It looks like there's a pretty big boulder in the back that slipped off the front of the face and into the exterior portion of the building which caused the collapse."
Fire officials say at least part of the building will need to be demolished. There was no word yet as to whether crews will be able to save part of it.
