A Bronxville family says their monthly gas bill has been at least $1,000 since they moved into their home.
The renter, who wishes to remain anonymous, told News 12 that they have not received help from Con Edison.
The issue began when the renter, his wife and two young children moved into their 1,700-square foot Bronxville home in July of 2022.
“The heat alone was constantly around $1,700, and the highest heat bill was $2,000,” said the renter.
The family stopped using heat and kept the home at 55 degrees during the winter so the pipes would not burst. However, their bill still did not change.
"We’re making adjustments, like not eating out. We have space heaters running in the day, we’re bundling up in sleep sacks. It was just a horrible way to live,” he said.
After contacting Con Edison for the better part of a year, the family says they finally got a visit last October.
“When that person came, they immediately said, ‘this is a Con Edison issue, you are paying for someone else's heat.’ They alluded to the fact that we might be paying a commercial property or larger building,” he said.
The renter says that Con Edison stated they did not have to pay their bills until the dispute was resolved. Yet as months go by, there seems to be no solution in sight.
The family says they have racked up a bill for more than $15,000.
“We have to call them every month to just remind them of this hold on our account,” said the renter.
The family says they receive threats that their electric and gas will be turned off each month.
“We have no idea what to do and we feel like we’re stuck in purgatory right now,” he said.
In a statement to News 12, Con Edison said they will review the bills and contact the customer.
