Bronx officials and community leaders gathered Wednesday to announce their support for Sonia Sotomayor, the first Hispanic nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Bronx Borough President Rubin Diaz Jr. and Rev. Al Sharpton held a news conference at the Bronxdale Houses, where Sotomayor grew up, in order to celebrate her nomination by President Barack Obama. Local officials are now calling on Republicans in the U.S. Senate to set aside their partisanship and avoid dragging out Sotomayor's confirmation process.
"When you look beyond the rhetoric, when you look beyond the hyperbole, when you look beyond the words and you look at the record, her resume is second to none," Diaz says.
