New Jersey American Water has issued a mandatory boil water advisory for a portion of Bridgewater following a 12-inch water main break on North Bridge Street that caused a loss of water pressure, the company announced Friday.
The advisory affects approximately 400 customers, two senior living centers with a combined 300 residents, Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School, Somerset County Library and Somerset County Vocational and Technical High School, according to the utility.
Police sent an alert about the water main break around 12:30 a.m., but residents say water had been flowing since at least midnight and possibly earlier.
The break is located on North Bridge Street between Prince Rodgers Avenue and Seventh Street.
The company said a potential threat to water quality exists in the affected area and customers should boil tap water for at least one minute before using it for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, making ice, washing produce or preparing infant formula. Bottled water may also be used.
The impacted area includes portions of North Bridge Street and dozens of nearby residential streets.
Bridgewater police had blocked off the roadway Friday, and drivers were being detoured through surrounding streets, including Prince Rodgers Avenue near the Bridgewater Commons.
"There's a lot of water here… I'm just trying to get to work," said one nearby worker dealing with the disruption.
The boil water advisory will remain in effect until repairs are completed and water quality testing confirms the supply is safe, the utility said.
