The Odell Avenue Bridge in Yonkers is finally getting fixed, but the ongoing work is causing some traffic tie-ups for drivers.
Traffic was backed up for miles in both directions on the Saw Mill Parkway on Monday night as repairs began on the bridge.
In January, the driver of an SUV skidded on black ice and slammed into the side of the overpass, creating a 24-foot hole, and sending thousands of pounds of rock on to the parkway below. Amazingly no one was hurt.
Repairs are closing the northbound lanes, so there's no danger of stones dropping onto passing vehicles below. Southbound lanes will occasionally have to be closed as well depending on what part of the overpass crews are working on.
Drivers are being diverted off the Saw Mill onto side roads and then back on to the parkway.
The good news is the work is being done at night starting at 9 p.m. and going until 6 a.m. The repairs are expected to take three weeks.
