River levels are expected to crest or slowly come down Monday night but not before flooding lots of areas - leaving vehicles destroyed and some homes and apartments surrounded by water.
In the borough of Middlesex, heavy rains led to flooding along Route 28 at the Bound Brook bridge. Traffic merged into one lane as vehicles slowly made their way through the flood waters. Just before 2 p.m., the Bound Brook crested at 10.53 feet, enough to partially submerge parked cars at the Park Brook Gardens. Although no evacuation orders were given, at least one resident needed help getting away from the flooded area.
Attention now turns to the Raritan River, where a crest overnight is expected to be at the moderate to major flood stage.
"I was working during Hurricane Floyd in 1999, I watched it, worked the midnight shift how the rivers crested, everything flooded overnight. That's what we're concerned about here for the American legion because we had it flood two years ago. We are trying to prevent that from happening again," said Frank McGuire, 3rd Vice Commander at the American Legion Middlesex, located adjacent to the Bound Brook.
Two years ago, this same area was devastated by record flooding during the remnants of Hurricane Ida.
