Black ice spins car onto frozen Bronx River
A patch of black ice is being blamed for two accidents this morning including a car winding up in the Bronx River.
Police say the accident happened on the northbound Bronx River Parkway near Vermont Terrace around 8:30 a.m. today. They say a woman drove over the black ice, lost control, hit the center guard rail, and then spun out of control onto the frozen-over Bronx River.
The driver of the car was able to get out and safely to shore. She tells News 12 she is sore and a little shaken up, but will be more cautious to look out for black ice next time.
Immediately after that accident, another driver also lost control after hitting the same patch of ice and hit the guard rail.
There were no major injuries reported.
The cars were able to be cleared in about an hour, and traffic on the Parkway is running as usual.
Police say it is important to watch for black ice as melting snow during the day often freezes overnight.
