Black ice may be to blame for massive pileup on the Saw Mill River Parkway this morning.
Westchester County police say between 15 and 17 cars were involved in the accident around 6:40 a.m. today. They say the driver of an SUV was traveling southbound on the parkway when he lost control, hit another car, went up on the embankment and rolled over.
Unfortunately, officials say the spot of the accident was at a blind curve on the parkway, and it was still dark. Police say by the time drivers rounded the curve and saw the accident there was simply no time to react, and one car slammed into another causing a chain reaction. Some told police they slid on what felt like ice as they hit the brakes.
Investigators are still trying to determine why the driver lost control, but say black ice could be a factor. Cops estimate 15 to 17 cars were involved and had to be towed away. Some of the cars may have driven off before police arrived at the scene.
The southbound side of the parkway had to be shut down for two and a half hours, which caused major backups on side roads.
