More than 100 student athletes from 18 schools participated in the first-ever county all-girls wrestling championship tournament at Bethpage High School. "My high school is hosting the event. I am very excited for the sport," explained Bethpage sophomore, Autumn Obritis. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, the number of girls wrestling teams across the country has quadrupled over the past decade. Nassau County has seen a 53% spike in the sport within a year. "The girls worked just as hard as the boys, so they deserve this spotlight," added wrestling coach Ryan Pingitore. The winners of the county match in Bethpage now qualify to take part in the state championship tournament in Albany on Feb. 27.
