A growing shortage of referees and umpires is disrupting youth sports across the region, leaving games canceled and fields empty.
Athletic directors say they are often forced to move or cancel middle and junior varsity games due to a lack of officials.
"In the 7th and 8th grade levels the coaches have to officiate the game to get them played," said Dave Greiner of the Westchester Umpire Association.
Veteran referee Sam Riti, who has officiated for over 50 years, said, "We are there to enforce the rules and there are reasons for the rules."
Teachers, once a key part of the officiating pool, are now turning to more flexible side jobs like tutoring.
Officials say poor treatment is driving many away, with 23 soccer referees leaving in one year.
"We have adults waiting to tell officials they're not happy with the job they do," Castagna said. "That has to stop, and it has to start with each district."
"Be a parent. Don't embarrass your son or your daughter. Just go there and enjoy it," Riti said.
