A benefit was held at the Silk Factory in Newburgh to raise money for firefighter Guillermo Mollins.
News 12 first reported on Mollins' story in
January. He was severely injured by a wrong-way driver in New Jersey. Now, his colleagues are coming together to show their support.
"I cannot be more appreciative to be a part of an organization bigger than myself," said Mollins.
The room was filled with active and retired firefighters, former co-workers of Mollins and friends. Some even traveled from New Jersey.
"The fire department is all about a brotherhood. We help people in need, and when we need, we come together as a family," said City of Newburgh firefighter Nicholas Bedetti.
Mollins is a U.S. Army veteran, a corrections officer and a city firefighter. His colleagues say his sick leave will eventually run out, meaning he'll have to take an unpaid leave of absence.
"We want to make sure he has enough money to carry him through the rest of his injuries and his recovery," said Bedetti.
Mollins just got out of rehab in mid-February. He's undergone several surgeries to treat fractures to his face, a broken leg, a broken pelvis and a neck injury.
"I'm being optimistic," said Mollins. "I mean, I'm still hanging in there. Some days are rough. My goal is to come back...hopefully I'm looking forward to a full recovery."
Everyone lined up to greet Mollins once he arrived, laughs were shared and the smile on Mollins face spoke volumes to how much this meant to him.
"He is missed right now in the firehouse by the members," said Former City of Newburgh Fire Chief F.J. Spinelli.
"I'm hanging in there, you know, day in and day out. Making the best of this," said Mollins.
There is another benefit taking place on March 14 at the Temple Hill Tavern. It's happening from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
