Pat Quinn returns to Iona College to raise money with his Ice Bucket Challenge
Quinn was diagnosed with ALS at the age of 30 in 2013, and the following year, helped create the challenge to raise money to find a cure for the disease.
Campus pride is loud and proud at Iona College today. One of the school's most important alumni is back on campus this afternoon and is raising money with his Ice Bucket Challenge. Dozens of Iona College students have joined in the fight against ALS with college alumnus and co-founder of the challenge Pat Quinn.
Quinn was diagnosed with ALS at the age of 30 in 2013, and the following year, helped create the challenge to raise money to find a cure for the disease. Since then, events like these have helped raise more than $200 million.
Each year, the Iona community looks forward to coming together to show support for Quinn. "It really means a lot when everyone comes out. We have a wide variety of people on campus that come, athletes, students, commuters. It's really reassuring to know that people care about the cause and that they're willing to go out of their way to come and donate to his foundation," says senior Oliva Santos.
While there's still no cure for ALS, a new drug funded by the money raised through the challenge was showing promise in stopping some of the effects of the terrible disease as recently as September.
