Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, and many people spent the day enjoying the freedom protected by America's troops by soaking in rays at the beach.
At Oakland Beach in Rye, an American flag was planted firmly in the sand while children splashed in the water.
Among the beachgoers was Marine Henry Valencia, who served in 1998. "It's a very important day for all my friends, everyone I served with," he said. "I'm very proud."
