Bronx voters cast their ballots Tuesday in the 33rd State Senate District and 86th Assembly District primaries.
Former state Senator and long-time gadfly of the Bronx Democratic Party Pedro Espada unseated state Sen. Efrain Gonzalez Jr.
Gonzalez has been accused of using $400,000 of taxpayers' money for personal bills and is set to go on trial. That money allegedly paid for a vacation home and his daughter's college tuition.
Espada, a health care entrepreneur, was once accused of using money intended for the Soundview Health Center to fund a political campaign. Espada was acquitted, but three others involved in the scandal pled guilty.
Two candidates also went head-to-head for the seat vacated by Assemblyman Luis Diaz. Diaz left the assembly to take a job with Gov. David Paterson's administration.
Nelson Castro won the support of the Democrats despite a petty larceny conviction from four years ago, defeating Mike Soto. Castro was convicted of collecting unemployment while working a job. He was also arrested and charged in March for driving with a revoked license.
