Authorities are investigating who left a suspicious device in a car truck, prompting a heavy police presence Wednesday in Yonkers.
Police say they got a phone call around 7:45 a.m. Wednesday about the suspicious package in the trunk of a 32-year-old woman's car parked near 270 North Broadway, where she lives. There was no answer at her door on Thursday.
"She got in her car, heard something rattling in the trunk, opened the trunk and saw this device," said Yonkers Police Commissioner Charles Gardner. "It looked like an explosive device. There were wires and other components that made it appear to be a rudimentary type of an explosive device."
Responders put emergency procedures into place, closing down roads in the area and telling nearby residents to stay inside and away from windows. The device also caused evacuations and a school lockdown.
The Westchester County bomb squad was called to the scene, and a bomb-detecting robot was rolled down to the car. The device was dismantled and authorities determined there was no public risk.
Federal authorities joined Yonkers police as they interviewed the woman to determine how the device got into the car. No arrests have been made in the case.
