Two Briarcliff Manor men are homeless tonight, and one is being treated for smoke inhalation after he allegedly started a mattress fire while smoking in bed.
Kevin McFadden, 62, owns the two-family house on North State Road. The bedridden McFadden, who is battling cancer and has a broken hip, was smoking in bed when he accidentally started the fire at around 2 p.m. Sunday, according to authorities.
Firefighters arrived to hear him screaming for help, and they pulled him to safety.
Doug McMahon, who lives in the two-family home and is McFadden's friend, hopes to be able to return to the home, which has been condemned. He is staying in a motel for now.
"He's terminally ill," said McMahon. "He wanted to end his days here," McMahon said about his friend.
