ATV riders and snowmobilers in Carmel took to the frozen Lake Secor Saturday, in open defiance of law enforcement authorities who warned against the potentially dangerous practice.

Homeowner Frank Cardenas says he's seen the risky behavior play out on the ice many times before.

"If somebody happens to fall through the cracks, we're not going to know, and you worry for the community," he added.

Carmel Police Chief Anthony Hoffmann says he is bringing in additional officers on overtime and increasing staffing of emergency responders. The police department says it received calls from residents that a big race was planned for Sunday on one of the town's frozen bodies of water.

"We have an ATV-type of vehicle that can also go on the ice, and we have local tow companies that if we have to impound these vehicles, we will do so," Hoffmann warned.
