Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino says the stepped up Ebola screening measures put in place by New York Gov. Cuomo and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie are a mess and won't be enforceable.
Cuomo and Christie's announcement on Friday called for tighter screening measures at John F. Kennedy Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport.
Astorino, the Republican candidate for governor, slammed Cuomo while speaking at a waffle breakfast fundraiser in Hastings on Sunday. He says the new protocols are a mess and are not well thought-out.
On Saturday, the governor was asked by reporters what would happen if a traveler refused to be quarantined. He said officials had never considered whether people refusing to go along with the quarantine could face prosecution or arrest, suggesting that the quarantines may not be enforceable.
A senior White House official told the New York Times that the decision by the governors was "uncoordinated and very hurried." The official also told the Times that the Obama administration has been pushing the governors to reverse their decision.
Both Cuomo and Christie are standing by their protocols, and say that federal guidelines did not go far enough.
