The Nuclear Regulatory Commission held its annual meeting regarding the Indian Point nuclear power plant's safety performance Wednesday.

The meeting marked the NRC's first public meeting since it was announced that the plant would be shutting down its two reactors by 2021. 

Some who attended the meeting expressed concern about how the plant would go about safely dismantling all operations. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says the plant is safe.

"The plant operated safely and it didn't have any inspection findings or any other performance indicators that were of more than minor safety significance," says NRC spokesperson Diane Screnci. "Once the plant stops operating we don't go away. We continue to carry out an inspection program."

The decommissioning of Indian Point could take decades to complete. It currently provides 25 percent of the region's power, generating $1.6 billion annually for the state.
