An annual domestic violence awareness event in the Hudson Valley today held even more importance this year.

The fourth annual "Shine the Light" walk in solidarity" stepped off in Rockland and Westchester as agencies, advocates and others came together at midspan on the Mario M. Cuomo/Tappan Zee Bridge to honor and remember the victims and survivors of domestic violence.

Six lives were taken by domestic violence in Rockland since last December.

Three in New City, one woman in Hillcrest, Spring Valley and Tomkins Cove.

A woman in Yonkers was killed by her husband this week.

"It's important that from the prevention side of it we get folks to understand the issue and how we actually build health relationships, what happens if we do find ourselves in trouble, right? Where do we go?” said Jay Ortiz with the Center for Safety & Change. “Also letting folks know that it’s OK to intervene and that there are experts here to help you out that we'll guide you through the process as well."

"To those who are victims of domestic violence, we have you. We got you. There's a safe place to go among all these organizations here," said Denise Williams the interim CEO of My Sisters' Place. "And for those who are causing those harm, please and go seek help. There is help out there."

For those who need help, reach out to the organizations in Rockland at Center for Safety & Change 845-634-3344 and in Westchester at My Sisters' Place 800-298-7233.
