A former Yonkers city councilwoman and a former Yonkers GOP chairman are making another push to get their convictions overturned.

Attorneys for former Councilwoman Sandy Annabi and her political mentor, Zehy Jereis, appealed their convictions before a U.S. Court of Appeals panel in Manhattan Wednesday.

Attorneys for the government have argued that the pair should remain in prison. Annabi is serving six years; Jereis is serving four years. They were convicted on bribery, extortion and corruption charges in 2012. The federal charges stem from a switched vote on two key development projects in the city, including the Ridge Hill Shopping Center.

Annabi's parents, who visit her every weekend, were inside the courtroom Wednesday, joined by family friend Ramsey Clark, who is a former U.S. attorney general under President Lyndon B. Johnson.

"She's a good person, from a good family," he said. "A good contributor to this country and society and she should be free."

Annabi's defense attorney said new evidence should be considered in overturning her conviction.

"Based on newly discovered evidence that a key cooperator had actively engaged in another bribe and failed to disclose it to the government and to the jury," said defense attorney Edward Sapone.

But the government believes that admission by its own witness is no bombshell, and that it doesn't change the defendant's guilt.

If Annabi isn't granted a new trial, her attorney plans to continue to try and clear her name.

A decision is expected within six weeks.
