The alleged ring leader of a huge Internet sports gambling outfit busted over the weekend is now facing drug charges.
Police arrested 18 suspects, including reputed mobsters, after the gambling ring was busted in Harrison. Harrison Police Chief David Hall oversaw the investigation since it began a year and a half ago. He says the ring would take $100,000 bets at a time on anything from the Kentucky Derby to boxing matches.
Police say the ring leader is Anthony Giovaniello, of Hawthorne, a former Yonkers gang member. During the raid, police confiscated tons of steroids, marijuana and prescription pills. Hall says Giovaniello used young people to sell the drugs for him.
Police say more arrests should follow as the investigation unfolds.
