Outraged animal lovers staged a protest outside an animal shelter in Harrison Saturday, claiming the cats and dogs are living in unsanitary conditions.
Activists arrived at the Westchester Shore Humane Society on Harrison Road with the intention of rescuing allegedly neglected and sick animals, only to discover the gates of the shelter locked.
Some animal lovers are calling the Westchester Shore Humane Society a house of horrors, where many of the animals are in dire need of medical care.
Madeline Arcuri, of Hicksville, says she visited the shelter last week to adopt a dog and saw that most of the animals had urine and feces on their fur.
Sources say there have been many complaints about the privately owned shelter in the past, and officials from the county Board of Health frequently visit the facility.
Animal lovers who rallied in front of the shelter say they will return every week until the issue is resolved.
