6 more weeks of winter or an early spring? Here's what the Groundhog Day prognosticators predicted for 2023

Groundhog Day can provide some great family fun and a silly break from the harsh winter. Here is what our local groundhog prognosticators (plus a chicken and a prairie dog) predicted.

Malverne Mel

Malverne Mel predicted an early spring at Crossroads Farm. It was Mel's 28th year of predictions. Visitors were able to enjoy music from the Banjo Rascals.

Holtsville Hal

Holtsville Hal rang in Groundhog Day at the Holtsville Ecology Site and predicted six more weeks of winter. News 12 Long Island's Danielle Campbell was live in Holtsville with the report.

Allen McButterpants

Allen McButterpants did not see his shadow at the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center in Hampton Bays - meaning an early spring. The rescue also taught some fun facts about groundhogs and how the Groundhog Day tradition came about.

Beardsley Bart

Staten Island Chuck

Lady Edwina of Essex

Lady Edwina of Essex saw her shadow for six more weeks of winter! She also picked the Philadelphia Eagles to win the Super Bowl. News 12 New Jersey's Lauren Due was at Turtle Back Zoo for the celebration.

Connecticut Chuckles

Manchestor Mayor Jay Moran and Lutz Children's Museum executive director Patricia Buxton joined Chuckles XI, who predicted an early spring. Watch the ceremony here, including a song.

Cluxatawney Henrietta

She's not a groundhog - she's a "weather-predicting chicken!" Muscoot Farm celebrated Groundhog Day with Cluxatawney Henrietta. She laid egg to signal an early spring. News 12 Westchester checked in with Henrietta to find out more about how she pecks her prediction.
