Nearly 47 million people are expected to travel for the Thanksgiving holiday. Despite the recent terror fears, air travel is up 40 percent from last year.

Thursday's first flight departed at around 6 a.m. from Westchester County Airport. 

With millions of Americans traveling Thursday and a heightened state of security in the wake of the Paris attacks, it is advised to get to the airport early. Airlines advise travelers to arrive at the airport two hours before their flight is scheduled to take off. They also remind travelers to leave liquids and perishables at home.

Westchester County police say they have strengthened their presence at the airport and all other transportation hubs.

Travelers should expect longer wait times as TSA spends more times inspecting passengers and luggage.

Expect random checks and hand swabs to test for explosive residue. Even pre-check passengers may be required to remove their shoes and laptops.
