Four businesses were destroyed after a fire swept through a row of stores early Monday morning in Mount Vernon.
The fire allegedly started just after 2 a.m. inside a Caribbean catering service and restaurant on West First Street. The fire quickly spread to three other businesses, including a supermarket.
All four businesses sustained extensive fire, smoke and water damage. Two firefighters were taken to the hospital to be treated for heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation. They were later released.
City officials will determine if the remaining structures are safe or need to be torn down.
