Memorial Field in Mount Vernon is one step closer to becoming a working football field again.
The city spent $2.4 million to remove 37,000 tons of debris that is standing in the way of progress. The field has become a source of political feuding over the past decade.
"It’s called cooperation and working together,” says acting Mayor Andrew Wallace. “Instead of speaking at each other, we were talking to each other."
The county took over the botched project last year and is now charged with completing the renovation of a new football field after the state Department of Environmental Conservation gives them the all clear.
The debris was dumped illegally at the field about five years ago. It is still unknown who the perpetrator was.
The county has not unveiled a timeline for when the field would be completed.
