Ending violence at home and keeping guns off the streets were topics discusses by both candidates running for the 35th state Senate District seat Monday. The residents of southwest Yonkers are no strangers to violence in the streets. With four cameras now perched high above the main shopping area on South Broadway, Yonkers police are keeping a watchful eye on what's happening below. Incumbent Senator Nick Spano (R-NY) reminded voters that he secured $55,000 from the state to help fund the program. He says he hopes it provides a feeling of comfort for shoppers and diners alike. The senator's record on guns, however, did not win him the endorsement of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence. The statewide organization, which supports stricter gun-control measures, is backing Democrat Andrea Stewart-Cousins for state Senate. The six-term county legislator from Yonkers supports the group's top priority, which is requiring gun shop owners to lock up their weapons at night. With Election Day just a little more than a week away, both candidates are making their final push for votes.
