Three teenage girls from Yorktown and Cortlandt were arrested after police say they desecrated the Mohegan Park Jewish Center in Yorktown.
According to police, the trio broke into the center Thursday night and scrawled a swastika and graffiti on the walls, trashed a menorah in the sanctuary and ripped a Torah into pieces. The girls are all being charged with burglary, but hate crime charges are still possible.
The anti-Semitism is disheartening to the president of the center, which serves 15 families in the Mohegan Lake community.
"My father is a survivor of the Holocaust and it seems like sometimes it?s more blatant than other times, but it has expressed itself in a very sudden, ugly way in a very peaceful corner of Westchester,? says President Roger Kahn.
Two of the girls, ages 17 and 18, are in custody at the Westchester County Jail. The third, a 15-year-old, was released to her parents. Police were able to make the arrests quickly after a neighbor spotted suspicious activity at the center Thursday.
There is a rally planned at the center on Sunday to present a united front against bigotry and hatred.
