The village of Port Chester was one of the hardest-hit communities by this weekend's storms, getting 24.5 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service.
Streets and sidewalks in the downtown business district are generally clear today, and officials say that is because the removal is a highly coordinated effort. They say that conditions should continue to improve as crews maintain their cleanup efforts. Officials began planning for the storm days in advance and passed an emergency ordinance to adjust parking to make the cleanup easier.
At the height of the storm, 20 plows were out trying to keep up. Snow removal machines that are typically used at airports have been transferring the snow to trucks, which will dump it away from the main business area. "In a compact village where parking is very tight, it's very important to move the snow so we can regain some of the parking space," says Port Chester Mayor Dennis Pilla.
Business people say they really appreciate the effort by the DPW crews. "That's what I like about this town. See they clean streets. I hope people come back today," says merchant Janet Sucena.
Mayor Pilla says crews are also out cleaning the residential streets and are working in the most densely populated areas first.
