Nearly two dozen people were injured after flames broke out Tuesday morning in a store and spread to neighboring homes in the Parkchester section of the Bronx.
Officials say the fire started around 5:30 a.m. in a furniture store on the first floor of 1547 Commonwealth Ave. and quickly traveled upward to 12 apartments. More than 200 firefighters responded to the scene and battled the flames for over five hours.
A total of 23 people, including a firefighter and nine children, suffered minor injuries.
The American Red Cross is providing temporary housing for some of the displaced residents.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Last week, a fire on Prospect Avenue in the Bronx killed 12 people. It was the deadliest fire in New York City in over 25 years.
