Roads
across the Hudson Valley are finally getting better, but officials
are warning about potential refreezing as temperatures drop into this evening.
Luckily,
many people decided to stay home today and not brave the icy roads that caused
numerous accidents this morning. A car that slammed through a guard rail on the
northbound side of the Saw Mill River Parkway near Elmsford was one of dozens
of crashes reported.
The
treacherous conditions didn't stop Alfonso Magnotta from making his Bronx to
Pleasantville commute to open his barbershop. "You have to be careful; it took me 45
minutes, usually takes me 20 because there was a lot of ice."
Icy rain
began falling during the overnight hours covering Hudson Valley roadways with
what looked like snow but it was much worse.
It was a
combination of some of the worst weather winter has to offer.
Plows were
out trying to scrape the roadways and salt at the same time.
It was
extremely slow going for drivers and with good reason.
Luckily
many schools are closed this week for winter break so there were less cars on
the roads plus many just may have decided to play it smart and work from home
rather than brave the icy conditions. "It's a very bad winter this year
but it comes every year you can't do nothing about it," says Magnotta.
