A 28-year-old woman who was stabbed multiple times in the neck Friday night while running along a Brooklyn bike path was preparing for the New York City Marathon, according to police.
Police say the woman was running alone along the bike trail off the Belt Parkway in Bath Beach around 8:15 p.m. near Bay Parkway and Cropsey Avenue when she was attacked.
She was later found collapsed on the path and rushed to the hospital, where she is in critical condition.
The attack prompted a police search of the area Saturday, with detectives combing through tall grass, using drones and searching by boat near the water for evidence.
The bike path was closed as investigators worked to piece together what happened.
Runners and cyclists in the area said the trail can become especially dark at night, with few lights or cameras beyond passing traffic on the nearby parkway.
“It’s scary. But, I mean, I always try to run. Never alone, always with someone,” said Gabby Garcia, who was stopped by police while trying to access the trail Saturday.
Police posted a wanted notice in the neighborhood, but no photograph of the suspected attacker was available.
Police urge anyone with information that could help investigators to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or, for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).
