Parade of the Dead brings Mexican culture and traditions to Jersey City
Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican tradition that honors loved ones who have passed away. Rather than focusing on grief, the celebration honors loved ones by keeping their memories alive.
Colorful costumes, traditional music and a celebration of life filled the streets of Jersey City as the annual Parade of the Dead brought the spirit of Mexico’s Día de los Muertos to the community.
Organized by the Riverview Farmers Market, the annual parade has grown into a beloved Jersey City tradition over the past 12 years.
Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican tradition that honors loved ones who have passed away. Rather than focusing on grief, the celebration honors loved ones by keeping their memories alive.
One of the most important parts of the tradition is the ofrenda, or altar. Families decorate them with photographs, personal belongings and marigolds, also known as cempasúchil. The flowers are believed to help guide the spirits of loved ones back to visit.
The celebration also featured Catrinas and Catrines — elegant skeleton figures dressed in elaborate, colorful outfits that have become iconic symbols of Día de los Muertos. Participants also had the chance to show off their creativity and cultural pride in a costume contest.
Organizers and participants say the event brings families together to share Mexican culture and remember those who are no longer physically here.
