An unidentified man was found dead in Canarsie on Friday morning, according to police sources.
The man’s body appeared to be concealed in a garbage bag, as police surrounded it for most of the morning outside an old movie theater near the corner of Avenue L and E 93rd Street.
Council Member Mercedes Narcisse, who represents the area, tells News 12 that she’s received information indicating that the body may have been moved from in front of a nearby church before being placed on the sidewalk near Avenue L & East 93rd Street.
Surveillance video obtained by News 12 seems to confirm that. It first showed someone take the bag out of the trunk of a light-colored car and leave it outside the church a block away near the corner of Avenue L and East 94th Street.
Then, shortly before 9 a.m., someone is seen walking up to the bag with a push-cart dolly, putting the bag on it and then pushing it down the block.
Multiple neighbors tell News 12 off camera the man with the cart is well-known in the area for collecting trash, then looking through it for anything that can be sold.
According to one person who spoke with him, he opened the bag outside the movie theatre, saw it was a person, then flagged down a sanitation worker.
NYPD sources confirm to News 12 that a sanitation worker did reach out to police.
The man is believed to have been in his 50s or 60s, but his identity or the cause of death has not been released.
