A manhunt is underway for the man police say shot and killed another man inside a subway station in Midtown Manhattan on Saturday afternoon.
It happened just before 12:30 p.m. at the 7th Avenue station near West 53rd Street.
Sources close to the investigation say they believe the victim and two other men were arguing on the northbound E train platform when gunfire erupted.
The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the chest. He is believed to be in his 30s, according to police.
Paramedics rushed the man to Bellevue Hospital, where the NYPD says he was pronounced dead.
Police released images of the alleged gunman just hours after the shooting.
Investigators say he was last seen wearing a red tracksuit, a black vest, a black face mask and carrying a backpack.
Notify NYC alerted the public to expect road closures, traffic delays, mass transit disruptions and emergency personnel in the area.
According to the MTA, A, C, D, E and F trains are skipping the station as of Saturday afternoon due to the NYPD investigation.
The shooting marks the second homicide in the New York City transit system in less than a month.
On Sept. 30, 59-year-old Mesias Lojano was stabbed to death aboard a northbound J train in Queens.
MTA Chief Security Officer Michael Kemper provided the following statement in response to Saturday's shooting..
“Guns have no place in transit which is why we’ve strongly supported New York State's legal fight to make sure it's illegal to carry them in the subway system. This was evidently a dispute between two individuals that ended tragically, and we have coordinated with the NYPD on the investigation from the earliest minutes -- especially to retrieve video from platform and train car cameras. The perpetrator will be caught and should face maximum consequences from the justice system. It is fortunate nobody outside the fight was hurt.”
The NYPD urges anyone with information to call its Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
