The lemur habitat that opened at Essex County Turtle Back Zoo in July is having an impact beyond New Jersey, with proceeds from the exhibit helping fund conservation education efforts in Madagascar just months after opening.

Funds totaling $10,900 will support the Lemur Conservation Network, which consists of more than 60 conservation organizations in Madagascar and supports lemur conservation worldwide by creating shared educational resources and empowering conservationists through grants and professional development.

The lemur exhibit at the West Orange zoo features three species of lemurs: ring-tailed lemurs, red ruffed lemurs and brown collared lemurs.

There are more than 100 species of lemur that have evolved to occupy a variety of habitats and ecological niches, according to a press release. Lemurs are primates known for their pointed snouts, large eyes and long tails and primarily eat fruit and leaves.

Habitat destruction and hunting are the biggest threats to lemurs, and it is estimated that up to 90% of all lemur species could face extinction in the wild within the next 20 to 25 years.

The lemurs share their exhibit with Aldabra tortoises, also known as giant tortoises, which are among the largest tortoise species in the world.

"Essex County Turtle Back Zoo ensures that species we represent at the zoo are also being conserved in the wild. We collaborate with zoos and other partners all over the world to play a vital role in global conservation and species preservation initiatives..." said Turtle Back Zoo Director Dr. Jillian Fazio. "This is just one example of our international reach and the impact our guests support when they visit Turtle Back Zoo or become a member of the Zoological Society of New Jersey."

Funds for the grants were raised through the Turtle Back Biodiversity Fund in partnership with the Zoological Society of New Jersey.
