A male bald eagle at the Bergen County Zoo has died, county officials confirmed Tuesday.

The zoo identified the eagle as Contact but did not provide details about when or how he died.

“The entire team at the Bergen County Zoo was saddened by the loss of Contact, our male bald eagle,” the zoo said in a statement provided by the Bergen County executive’s office.

The zoo disputed unspecified reports about the circumstances surrounding Contact’s death, saying they were based on rumors that had not been substantiated by its veterinary team.

Zoo officials did not provide additional information about the eagle’s death.
