A man accused of stabbing a Bronx mother 22 times pleaded guilty to attempted murder on Wednesday.
Police say Christopher Joseph was arrested after stabbing Kaitlynn Berman inside her home in March 2025.
According to the Bronx District Attorney's Office, the judge recommends a sentence of 8½ years in state prison followed by five years of supervised release.
Joseph was charged with attempted murder, attempted assault, criminal possession of a weapon and other offenses following the attack.
Berman survived the stabbing but said she suffered permanent nerve damage and PTSD in a previous interview with News 12.
Berman says Joseph, someone she once considered a friend, stabbed her repeatedly inside her home while her 3-year-old daughter was in the next room.
She says the attack left her nearly blind and with permanent nerve damage on the right side of her face.
The case experienced multiple delays before reaching a plea agreement.
Most recently, a trial scheduled to begin in July 2026 was postponed after Joseph's defense attorney failed to appear due to an ongoing strike.
During that court appearance, attorneys indicated there was a plea offer under consideration.
During the plea proceeding, Joseph admitted to attempting to cause Berman's death.
The judge noted that Berman's survival was fortunate and described the proposed punishment as a significant sentence.
Joseph remains in custody pending sentencing, which is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 4.
