The Ulster County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that a Plattekill man shot and killed his wife before taking his own life inside their Milton Turnpike residence Friday night.
Deputies and emergency responders were called to the home at approximately 11:42 p.m. after two individuals were found unconscious and unresponsive by a family member and friend.
Melinda Brugger, 54, and James Brugger, 66, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation concluded that James Brugger shot Melinda Brugger multiple times, killing her. Officials said he then tampered with evidence and removed items from the residence in an effort to conceal the crime before turning the gun on himself.
The Ulster County Sheriff's Office confirms James Brugger died by suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Detectives, assisted by the New York State Police, conducted an extensive investigation of the residence and surrounding property.
The apparent motive was unresolved domestic issues, according to investigators.
