Suffolk County's Office of Emergency Management has notified the public of a high rip current risk until Saturday evening.

The notification applies to southwest and southeast Suffolk, and the OEM is advising anyone visiting beaches to stay out of the surf.

As News 12 reported, 46 people had to be rescued from rip currents at Smith Point Beach on Friday, with around 35 others rescued at Robert Moses State Park.

Lifeguard staff says 20 people were rescued at Smith Point Beach on Saturday as of 3 p.m.

State park officials also say that Hither Hills State Park is on restricted swim.

Lifeguards say when people get caught in a rip current, their first reaction is often to panic. But if you stay calm and swim parallel to shore, it will eventually release you.

Lifeguards say only swim between green flags, and if you can’t swim, stay near shore where your feet can touch the sand.
